No apology is needed for the endeavour to render more accessible to the profession in this country, a work onO perative Surgery by so eminent an authority asP rofessor Kocher. The book is essentially a record of the Author spersonal experience, and of his own methods of operation. To avoid an appearance of egotism he has written in the first person plural, and this plan has been followed in the translation. It has been found necessary to make a few alterations in the translation of the more purely anatomical descriptions, to keep them in harmony with those employed byE nglish anatomists. Otherwise the aim has been to adhere to the original as closely and as literally as possible. I desire to express my thanks to my friends Dr. G. Lovell Gulland and Mr. A lexis Thomson for the assistance they have given me with the translation, and toD r. Ernest Fortune for aiding me with the proofs. I gladly take this opportunity to express my warm thanks toP rofessor Kocher for entrusting to me the translation of his text-book, and for the valuable privileges I enjoyed while attending his Clinic.
